Investing in early child development
Quality Child Care Niagara (QCCN) is a standardized, research-based approach designed to enhance the quality of early childhood programs. QCCN has strengthened the foundation of child care and early childhood education through high quality child care experiences, individual developmental programming and outcomes, and supports and services throughout Niagara.
Consisting of parents, Early Childhood Educators, an advisory committee (parents, ECEs and community partners) and community organizations, QCCN is a region-wide commmunity based partnership.
There are three phases within the QCCN framework.
Phase 1: The Foundation, Programming Tools
- provides a baseline of tools used to formulate a consistent, high-quality early child development program that optimizes the development of all children, including those identified to be at risk or to have special needs
- Developmental Preschool Screen: Diagnostic Inventory for Screening Children, Preschool Screen
- Environment Rating Scales
- Speech Language Checklist
- Behaviour Checklist: Children's Actions, Relationships, and Emotions (C.A.R.E.)
- Documentation
Phase 2: The Application, Utilizing The Data
- outcomes from Phase 1 are evaluated
- developmental programming is designed to teach skills (through play) based on the skill level of the individual child as opposed to the chronological age of the child, to make progress sequentially, step-by-step, in every area of development, individually and within a peer group
- fosters children's growth
- supports children's sequential learning processes
- aligns children's social, emotional, motor skills, behavioural and cognitive abilities
Phase 3: Ongoing Support, Building Successes
- evaluates the progress of the child within the program/environment
- adapts the program/environment to resolve challenges
- if required, obtains follow-up with other commuity agencies
- provides on-going suppport from the QCCN team
QCCN promotes environments that maximize the developmental outcomes in all areas for every child enrolled in a child care program, including social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.
