Home Child Care Providers: Child Care Agency

Home-based entrepreneurs often choose to work with licensed home child care agencies as a means of ensuring a steady client base and a regular pay cheque. There's no question that working with a licensed home child care agency makes it easier to establish your business, as the agency will have already developed all of the systems you need to provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for the children in your care, and to track their progress and report to their parents. The agency can also provide a substitute caregiver should you fall ill or wish to schedule a vacation.

Since licensed home child care agencies are held accountable for their adherence to the Day Nurseries Act, the processes they use to screen and monitor caregivers are quite stringent. You may be asked to attend specialized training programs; to adhere to a certain curriculum; to disclose information about your spouse, children and pets; and to follow detailed policies and procedures designed to ensure the safety, well being and learning of the children entrusted to you. A representative from the licensed home child care agency will inspect your home on a regular basis and will be available as a resource to be certain that you meet all of your obligations under the Day Nurseries Act. Conscientious, well-qualified child care providers are always in high demand and seldom have any difficulty meeting any agency's requirements.

Do ensure that you review carefully and fully understand any contract that you sign with a licensed home child care agency. Some may not allow you to care for children in your home other than your own or those assigned to you by the agency. Some may not allow you to work with another licensed home child care agency while under contract to them. Be sure you understand your employment or self-employment status under the contract, and any tax implications associated with your work.
